Case Study

Many ‘firsts’ to celebrate for Barwon Health Victoria

Camperdown resident Graham Henderson is Barwon Health’s first teletrial participant. Mr Henderson is taking part in the BoneZone study, which aims to understand changes in bone mineral density in critically ill patients who have been admitted to intensive care.

Being a teletrial participant means Mr Henderson, who had his first treatment at Barwon Health, can cut his travel time by 42%. He says he’s thrilled to have his follow-up trial appointments locally.

It is the first teletrial for the Australia and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre (Monash University) and Barwon Health’s first Teletrial as a Primary Site.

Study project manager Allison Bone says, “We are pleased to be able to offer follow-up trial treatments for patients from regional and remote locations in the Southwest of Victoria closer to home.” South West Healthcare is acting as a satellite site.

Clinical trials benefit patients through comprehensive health screening, access to new interventions, and enhanced clinical care. The Australian Teletrial Program aims to improve access to and participation in clinical trials across rural, remote, and regional Australia.Learn more about research at Barwon Health here, and get more information on the Bone Zone Trial here.
