About

The Australian Teletrial Program

The Australian Teletrial Program aims to improve regional, rural and remote patient access and participation in clinical trials. Teletrials is a proven model and uses digital telecommunications to connect regional and rural clinical trial site clusters.

The Australian Teletrial Program is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Medical Research Future Fund infrastructures grant. The Program has been funded $75.2 million over five years to create the infrastructure across the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.

The program has successfully set up a Regional Clinical Trial Coordinating Centre in each participating state and territory. The staff at these centres are helping clinicans, researchers and sponsors set up and run teletrials in their local region.

Vision

The Program aims to improve access to, and participation in, clinical trials for rural, regional and remote Australians.

The Australian Teletrial Program is a health systems research initiative to treat and manage diseases and conditions locally, and make clinical trials for new novel drugs, technologies, and models of care more accessible to regional, rural and remote communities. Currently 88% of clinical trials are run from city or urban areas, meaning regional, rural and remote patients cannot access them unless they travel or move.

The program uses the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) for Good Clinical Practice (GCP) across six Australian jurisdictions.

Regional Clinical Trial Coordinating Centres have now been established in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and Victoria.
